Discovering a New Passion: Running by the Sea

One of the greatest shocks of our trip to Denmark was something quite fundamental – running. During our first week, our professor invited us to accompany him on an after-school run by the sea. I wasn’t particularly keen on it in the beginning. I never really liked running. But there was something about the calm Danish that this teacher’s energy convinced me to give it a try.

So, we left early after school, a group of us, from outside the dorms, and started jogging down towards the sea. The air was crisp and fresh, and the roads were surprisingly deserted. When we reached the sea, the view lay out so beautifully – the calm waves, the fresh wind, and the distant cry of seagulls made for a perfect view. It wasn’t physical exercise. It was amazing.

The teacher kept pace with us, encouraging all of us and keeping the pace easy. He described how he runs when he goes on vacation and how running clears his mind and starts his day on a positive note. His enthusiasm was inspiring. He never pushed us too hard, but just hard enough to make us think of what we were capable of. I actually felt energized after the run. It was a different kind of tired, not the languid, sleepy one, but the type that would make your body feel pulsing and your mind awake.

We repeated the run a few times in Denmark. It was increasingly getting easier and enjoyable every time. Something which had been an impromptu suggestion now became something to anticipate. I started running width friends on certain nights when the weather allowed. I realized running wasn’t just about physical well-being; it was also a way of exploration, unwinding, and bonding with what’s around you.

Looking back, I’m grateful the teacher invited us. He didn’t just teach us in the classroom – he shared a piece of his life and inspired us to try something new. Running by the sea in Denmark became one of the most meaningful memories of the whole exchange experience.

And who knows? Maybe it’s the beginning of a new habit that I’ll bring back home with me. Thanks Siniša
