The Moomin museum

On Thursday we went to the Moomin museum in Tampere. Moomin is pretty much the national cartoon of Finland. I have to admit I never actually watched the cartoon as a child or read any of the books *yet. Nonetheless the museum is really amazing. The whole place is massive and really modern. They have tableaux from every Moomin book crafted by Jansson, Tuulikki Pietilä and their friend, the physician Pentti Eistola. The whole history of the Moomins is explained in detail. From the very inception at Tove Jansson’s summer cottage. The tableaux are insanely detailed. Each one has a little display explaining the context behind it. There are also many of Jansson’s original drawings and sketches. I’d recommend the museum to anyone visiting Finland. Even if you don’t know anything about Moomins. Another interesting think I found out was the Japanese love Moomins. So much so that everything in the museum is translated into Japanese as well as English.
