Arrival in the city
When I arrived in Denmark, I was immediately surprised by the food. Their salted candies were one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever tasted. From the first bite, I felt like I had eaten something that wasn’t meant to be eaten at all. The taste was extremely salty, bitter, and almost burning, and the aftertaste lingered long after I swallowed it. The Danes apparently love them, but I find them completely inedible.
Funny food
Their salads are also something special. We are used to simple vegetable salads, but here they prepare strange combinations of ingredients. One of the most unusual salads I saw contained cashew nuts, tangerines and various vegetables. The taste? Strange. Somehow the sweet and salty didn’t go together, at least not to me. I had the feeling that this was not a real salad, but more of an experiment that failed.
The meat is also different. I expected the usual, salty flavors, but their dishes were often seasoned with sweet spices. Sometimes I felt like I was eating something that wasn’t quite decided whether it would be sweet or salty. The Danes apparently love these kinds of flavors, and I had a hard time adjusting to them.
Their behaviour
In addition to the food, I was also surprised by the behavior of the Danes. They are very reserved and rarely really let foreigners into their company. They are friendly and polite, but always a bit distant. I often got the feeling that they avoided foreigners, because I had to put a lot of effort into even making contact with them.
On the other hand, Denmark is a very orderly country. The traffic is much calmer than here, everyone respects the rules and the people are very organized. Their houses are mostly built of bricks, without facades like we are used to at home, which gives the cities a special look.
Conclusion
Although I haven’t completely gotten used to their food and way of life, I’m glad I had the chance to experience something so different. Denmark will definitely stay in my memory – if not for the people, then at least for those terrible salty candies!
