When I left Slovenia, a small but beautiful country filled with green forests and crystal-clear lakes, I embarked on a great adventure. My destination? Mikkeli, a city in Finland that welcomed me with open arms and unique experiences. This blog tells the story of my month living far from home, about new friendships, discovering different cultures, and ultimately about work experiences that shaped my view of the world.
First Week: Immersion in Finnish Education The first week of my exchange was dedicated to practical lessons at a local school. This part of the experience gave me valuable insights into the Finnish educational philosophy, which strongly emphasizes practical learning. Instead of sitting in a classroom and listening to lectures, I had the opportunity to actually apply theory in practice, which was refreshing and extremely beneficial. This approach showed me how practical experiences can deepen understanding and increase interest in learning.
The Next Three Weeks: Work Experience After the initial week of academic exploration, I spent the next three weeks working with a local employer. This was a chance to gain insight into the Finnish work environment, known for its efficiency, innovation, and high level of employee satisfaction. My workdays were filled with new challenges and learning opportunities, allowing me to expand my knowledge and skills in ways that go beyond the academic classroom.
Working with the employer also allowed me to experience the diversity of Finnish culture and work practices. I learned how much work ethic, respect for the individual, and the balance between professional and private life are valued. This experience taught me the value of adaptability, initiative, and the importance of teamwork. Culture, Nature, and New Friendships
The nature around Mikkeli was also breathtaking. Finland is known as the “land of a thousand lakes,” and I truly got to experience this unique beauty when exploring local natural landmarks. I also had the opportunity to spend some time in a traditional Finnish sauna, which was a refreshing and soothing experience.
