LEARNING THE ROPES

The third week of our stay in Jyväskylä is ending. We have been changing our educational environment every week, so we did a lot of different things.

The first week we were just getting to know Gradia school system, teachers, the city, … The only real thing we did was on Friday when we had to unload two trucks and then load them again for practice.

Next week we began to work with some of the students. Every day there was one student responsible for food delivery and we would go with them. Usually this student was Vili. A shy 17 year old who only talks when necessary, even though his English is perfect. Every morning we would come to school at 8.15, do a daily car check and leave the school warehouse. Our first stop was at the school cafeteria where we had our first coffee break. If you deliver food, you can take anything to eat or drink for free. After we had our coffee, we went at the back to the kitchen where we waited to get all the food, we would have to deliver that day. We loaded it to the truck and began with our “trip” around the campuses.

We had five destinations we would have to go to. All of them are a part of Gradia school. At around 10.15 our job was done, and we went to our campus to have some lunch. Our job continued in about an hour and a half. We had to get all the dirty dishes from the places we took food to before. We were done by 13.30 and this was the end of our school day.

This week me, Miha and Vili were on “internship” work at a company called Taipale. On Monday we just got to know our mentor and co-workers. On Tuesday and Wednesday we were separated. I was set to go on a ride with a driver called Jasu. I was at the warehouse at 6 o’clock. First, I helped him load the cargo and secure it with straps (belts). After that we went to the truck and started our ride. On Tuesday I wasn’t always allowed to get out of the truck at our stops because we were delivering things to the construction sites, and it could be dangerous.

However everywhere else I went out and helped him unload. The next day we weren’t delivering any construction material, so I was helping him all the time. It was fun and I had a really great time.

For the end of the week me and Miha were put into the warehouse together with Vili and two of his friends who were having an internship at Taipale even before. They aren’t really chatty with us, so we were really lost most of the time. We had to prepare the cargo next to the gate with the same post number as the package until lunch and after we just had to sweep the floor before we finished. It wasn’t that interesting but at least I learned how to use an electrical fork-lift.
