Home is where the heart is

I always wonder how it would be if I would live abroad. So far I have only been to a few countries outside Slovenia, and even then I was there just for a week or even less. I couldn’t even imagine living in Finland for a month.

When you are abroad for that long period of time, you really need to get used to the way the country you are in works, and it’s also nice if you learn some words in their language, and get to know how people behave. I think the first few days or even weeks are the most difficult for a tourist to get used to the country.

When we first came to Finland, I think we didn’t have a lot of problems with orientation, because luckily for us we live in times where you basically can’t be lost, if you just have the phone and the signal. Even language isn’t a problem, because most of the people here speak very nice English so we can normally communicate with them. The problem with unknown foreign language is that you can’t understand what they are talking to each other, so you never know when they talk about you. On the other hand it is funny because they don’t understand you, so actually if you have someone to talk to in your language you can easily talk to them without wondering if anyone understands you. One of the things I don’t really like is food. I like trying new food, but I still much more prefer home cooking.

So far I like living abroad. The thing I like the most is that I am much more independent and relaxed. I have no obligations except school, so I have more time for myself and my friends.
